UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Philippines

The Philippines is a country with a rich historical and cultural background, diverse to an extraordinary degree in so many ways. Its geographical and zoological diversity have resulted in it being included in the collective of 17 megadiverse countries in the world, which as a group share the majority of the world’s species of animal and plant life. True to such an interesting place, the history of the Philippines is also very rich.

One of the biggest events in Philippine history was the invasion of the Spanish in the 16th century, who ruled the country up until the Spanish-American war ended in defeat in 1898. The Baroque Churches of the Philippines were awarded UNESCO status in 1993, and refers to four churches which are symbols of the Philippines’ Spanish past. The churches are of particular note because of their fortress-like construction, and because of their fusion of Spanish architecture with Eastern motifs. The sturdy construction of the churches was necessary to survive the various attacks upon them, as the symbols of Christian Spanish power, that over the centuries were made upon them by local populations, as well as by occasional Muslim attacks. The four churches are San Agustin Church in Manila, Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion in Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, San Agustin Church in Paoay, Ilocos Norte Sto, and finally Tomas de Villanueva Church in Miag-ao, Iloilo.

The oldest church in the Philippines is San Agustin, and was completed in1607 under direction of The Order of St. Augustine. The Philippines suffers frequent earthquakes because of its geographical location, but San Agustin has survived them all, mainly thanks to its elliptical foundation. The ornate carvings on its wooden doors are spectacular. It is thought to be an exact replica of the Puebla Cathedral in Mexico.

Miag-ao church is best known for its façade, which blends traditional Philippine symbols with those of Catholicism. It features the coconut tree, a symbol of life and sustenance in Philippine culture, to which St. Christopher is carrying the infant Christ. It is also built as a defensive position, with strong walls and defensive towers.

The Philippines is well served by airlines flying routes from across the globe. Most major European airlines fly into Manila, the capital, and there are at least four airlines providing routes from North America. The easiest way to get your airline tickets is to use a travel search engine, who will search through what is available. Then all you need to do is pick the best option, buy the tickets and they will be waiting for you at the check-in desk.

A Diver’s Paradise

There are few, if any, more popular places to dive in the world than the Philippines. And with good reason. A country that consists of 7,107 islands in an archipelago spanning four different tropical seas naturally offers an amazing plethora of diving opportunities, and can cater to all abilities, from the complete novice who has never seen a wetsuit in their life, to the experienced professional. The Philippines receives approximately two million tourists each year, and it is unsurprising to those who know the place that many of these visitors come specifically to scuba dive.
